Amazon Freevee, the free, ad-supported streaming app that used to sit alongside Prime Video, officially shut down in August 2025. If you’re still looking for the standalone Freevee app, stop – it’s gone, and it isn’t coming back under that name. The good news is that the shows and movies didn’t disappear.

What Actually Happened to Freevee

Amazon announced the shutdown in late 2024 and pulled the plug on the separate Freevee app in the summer of 2025. Instead of killing the free, ad-supported catalog entirely, Amazon folded it directly into Prime Video. Nearly all of Freevee’s original shows and licensed movies now live inside the Prime Video app, in a dedicated free section.

How to Watch the Free Content Now

You do not need a Prime membership to watch it. All you need is a free Amazon account.

  • Open the Prime Video app (or go to primevideo.com) and sign in with any Amazon account – a Prime subscription is not required.
  • Look for the “Watch for Free” or “Free with Ads” row/section in the app.
  • Pick a title and press play – you’ll see occasional ad breaks instead of a subscription paywall.

That’s it – no payment method, no free trial to remember to cancel, no separate app to install.

Outside the US? It’s More Complicated

Amazon licenses this free catalog country by country, and the free section still isn’t available everywhere Prime Video itself is – Canada is a common example, even for people who already have a full Prime Video subscription.
