Fire Cube 3rd Generation

Amazon has announced the release of the Fire Cube 3rd Generation and it has some serious upgrades, the only feature that hasn’t changed is the voice activation which is similar in function to the Echo Dot.

What’s New with the 3rd Generation?

With the 3rd Generation comes a new look, instead of the matte outside it has taken on a similar appearance to the Echo Dot with a fabric wrap. In the back it features built-in Ethernet with a 10/100 Mbps Port, full-sized USB-A port, HMDI IN/OUT, and IR Extender Port. With the addition of the HDMI IN port it allows users to attach a cable box for handsfree control of live action.

The new internal specifications for the Fire Cube 3rd Generation include Amlogic POP-1-G Octa-Core GPU with four 2.2 GHz CA73 and four 2.0 GHz CA53 cores with a ARM G52 MP8 800 MHz GPU. Amazon has claimed its 20% more powerful the outgoing model and twice as powerful as the Fire TV Stick 4K Max,

Brand New Alexa Pro Remote

When purchased, the Fire Cube comes with the same Alexa Pro Remote for the Fire TV – Smart TV, which has programmable buttons that can be used for smart home as well as back ambient lighting. This remote can also be bought separately for $34.99.

Improved Audio and Visual

The positions of the internal speakers have changed to front facing with large back volume for more vocal clarity, bass performance and loudness.

With the increased power of the Fire Cube introduces ‘Super Resolution Upscaling’ which enhances the details, contrast and clarity of an HD resolution on 4K TV Screens. However, much like the Nvidia Shield. I do not expect this feature to make a huge differance.

Increased Wi-Fi Performance

The new Fire Cube supports Wi-Fi 6E and improvement from Wi-Fi 5, with ethernet compatibility it means less interference from other network devices that stream 4K. The internal processor is 20% more powerful toting a new octa-core 2.0 GHz processor. Keep in mind Wi-Fi 6E requires a compatible router such as the TP-Link Tri-Band for $199.99.

Is it Worth the Purchase?

For double the current price at $139.99, the new Fire Tv Cube is seeing a tiny price increase. However right now users are able to purchase the Fire tv cube 2nd generation for a fraction of the price. I believe the increased power will see the Fire tv Cube 3 Slightly overtake the Nvidia Shield tv Pro. However for gaming and interface I still prefer the Nvidia Shield tv.
