For those looking for a flexible media player to stream shows, movies, and sports, then Kodi is worth looking into.

Kodi was first made available on the Xbox under the name “Xbox Media Center” but has since rebranded to Kodi and made compatible with Windows, MacOS, Android, iOS, and Linux, among others.

The media player can also be downloaded to Amazon’s FireStick—giving users even more streaming options.

With that said, let’s take a deeper look at what Kodi is, how it works, and how to install it on your Fire TV.

What Is Kodi 21?

At its base, Kodi 21 Omega is the stable release of the app and is a media player capable of playing local files from home videos to music to viewing photos downloaded to your device. It has a simpler and intuitive user interface with a number of available add-ons.

These add-ons offer additional streaming capabilities such as streaming live TV, sports, movies, shows, and more.

On that note, it should be mentioned that Kodi is an open-source media player and some of the add-ons are illegal—containing pirated content. Because it is open source, some of the add-ons may even have malware; as such, it’s important to carefully choose each add-on.

Generally, sticking to Kodi’s official apps and vetted add-ons is the safer route as they are reviewed by the Kodi team and the wider community of users.

When it comes to whether Kodi is a legal app or not, it is (though laws vary by country and should be checked prior to downloading). While we do not offer legal advice, Kodi is an official app that can be found on app stores like Google Play and Microsoft and does not contain pirated content.

Instead, Kodi acts simply as a media player. Any add-ons that are downloaded are not a part of Kodi TV. Just like a phone or a computer, users can access legal and illegal content on Kodi, and it is ultimately up to the user what to download.

Downloading & Using Kodi TV: 5 Steps

Kodi is not available to download directly on the FireStick, but it can be downloaded from a third-party source. In this case, an app called Downloader can be used to install Kodi FireStick.

Step 1: Install Downloader

Downloader can be found on the official Amazon App Store simply by searching for it. Once found, select the Download button.

Step 2: Enable Installation of Unknown Apps

Go to Settings, My Fire TV, and then select Developer Options. If Developer Options is not available, go to Settings, My Fire TV, About, and select Fire TV Stick—then click it seven times to enable Developer Options.

Depending on your FireStick version, two options will appear: Install Unknown Apps or Apps from Unknown Sources. For the first option, select it and then you’ll be able to enable Downloader. For the second option, select it and then turn on Downloader when prompted.

Step 3: Install Kodi TV

In the Downloader app, search in the URL box either “https://kodi.tv/download” or the code: “35625.” Then, select and download the ARMV7A (32Bit) option.

Step 4: Launch Kodi TV

Once it is finished installing, you’ll be prompted to Open Kodi or click Done. Clicking Done will allow you to exit the downloader without going straight into Kodi. You can find Kodi in the Apps and Channels window where all installed apps are listed. Simply click on it to launch.

Step 5: Using Kodi FireStick

Once in Kodi, you’ll have to option to download files and add-ons. Just remember to do your due diligence before downloading a new add-on as some do contain pirated content and may just land you in legal trouble.

Official add-ons can be found in the Kodi repository, unofficial add-ons that have not yet been vetted can be searched for after allowing the installation of add-ons from unknown sources in Settings.

This can be done by selecting System, Add-ons, and enabling add-ons from Unknown sources. Once this is done, add-ons can be found by selecting File manager, Add source, and entering the source URL in the search bar.

Final Thoughts

Kobi 21 Omega provides users with the means to play media, audio, and even game files as well as stream media through the use of add-ons. While there is yet to be a direct means to install it directly from the Amazon App Store, it can still be installed through the use of third-party apps like Downloader—giving FireStick users a convenient and customizable media streaming experience.
