It’s normal for a Firestick to feel warm during use — it’s a small computer working behind your TV. But if it feels hot to the touch, shuts off unexpectedly, or performance drops noticeably during long sessions, overheating could be the cause.

Signs of Overheating

  • Apps becoming sluggish or unresponsive only after extended use
  • The device restarting or shutting down on its own
  • The Firestick feeling noticeably hot rather than just warm to the touch

Common Causes

Overheating is almost always about airflow. Firesticks plugged directly into a recessed HDMI port on the back of a wall-mounted TV, or tucked inside a closed cabinet with other warm electronics, don’t get enough space to dissipate heat. Direct sunlight hitting the TV and device, or a room that runs generally hot, can make it worse.

How to Fix It

  • Use the included HDMI extender cable so the Firestick hangs away from the TV instead of plugging in flush, giving it more room to breathe.
  • Make sure it isn’t enclosed in a tight cabinet or wedged behind other cables and devices.
  • Keep it out of direct sunlight and away from other heat-generating electronics.
  • Give it a break during unusually long streaming sessions, and let it fully restart occasionally rather than staying in standby for days at a time.

If your Firestick keeps shutting down even with good airflow, that can point to a failing power adapter or cable rather than heat itself — try the original Amazon power adapter if you’ve been using a third-party one.
