Firestick’s built-in parental controls let you restrict purchases, block mature content by rating, and set up kid-friendly profiles so children can only see age-appropriate apps and shows. Setting them up takes just a few minutes and gives you real peace of mind if kids share the same TV.

What Firestick Parental Controls Can Do

Amazon builds two layers of control into every Fire TV device: a PIN that can lock down purchases and content by rating, and profiles that let each family member, including kids, see only the apps and shows approved for them. You can use either on its own or combine both for tighter control.

Step 1: Set a PIN for Purchases and Content Ratings

  1. From the home screen, go to Settings, then Preferences, then Parental Controls.
  2. Select Parental Controls and turn the toggle on.
  3. Enter and confirm a 5-digit PIN. Choose something your kids won’t guess and that’s different from your Amazon account password.
  4. Under Viewing Restrictions, set the maximum movie and TV content rating allowed without entering the PIN.
  5. Turn on PIN Protect Purchases so the PIN is required before anything can be bought or rented on the device.

Step 2: Create a Kid Profile

  1. Go to Settings, then Profiles & Family Library.
  2. Select Add Child or Teen Profile and follow the prompts to create a profile with your child’s name and age.
  3. Choose which apps, channels, and content sources appear on that profile. Only apps you approve will be visible when your child is signed in.
  4. Set a daily screen time limit for the profile if you want the Firestick to lock automatically after a certain amount of use.
  5. Save the profile. Your child can switch to it from the profile selector on the home screen, while your adult profile stays PIN-protected.

Step 3: Fine-Tune Content Access with Amazon Kids

  1. On a computer or phone, sign in to your Amazon account and open the Amazon Parent Dashboard.
  2. Select your child’s profile to review and adjust which titles, apps, and web content they can access.
  3. Set educational goals, daily time limits, and bedtime hours if you have an Amazon Kids+ subscription, which syncs automatically to the Firestick profile.
  4. Changes made in the Parent Dashboard apply the next time the child profile is used on the Firestick.

Tips for Managing Parental Controls

  • Keep your PIN private and avoid using an obvious number like a birthday.
  • Review the approved apps list on each child profile every so often, since new apps you install won’t automatically appear there.
  • Create a separate profile for each child so you can tailor age ratings and time limits individually.
  • Turn off voice purchasing in Alexa settings separately, since Parental Controls alone don’t restrict voice-initiated orders.

Troubleshooting Parental Controls

If you forget your PIN, sign in to your Amazon account online and reset your Parental Controls PIN from the Amazon Household or Digital & Device settings page, then re-enter it on the Firestick. If the PIN prompt isn’t appearing before purchases, double check that PIN Protect Purchases is still toggled on, since a software update can occasionally reset the setting. If a child profile isn’t showing content you expected it to, confirm the app or title is marked as approved in the Amazon Parent Dashboard rather than only in the on-device settings.

Once your PIN, content ratings, and child profiles are set up, they’ll apply automatically every time your Firestick is used, so you only need to configure them once.
