Firestick Wi-Fi and Internet Connection Problems: How to Fix Them
A Firestick that won’t connect to Wi-Fi at all, keeps dropping the connection, or shows a “no internet” error is a different problem from ongoing buffering during playback, which usually has separate causes. The fixes below address connectivity failures specifically.
Confirm Your Firestick Sees Your Network
- From the home screen, go to Settings, then Network.
- Check whether your network appears in the list at all — if it’s missing entirely, the issue is likely with your router’s broadcast rather than the Firestick.
- If your network appears but shows as disconnected, select it and try reconnecting.
Fix a Firestick That Won’t Connect or Keeps Asking for a Password
- From Settings, then Network, select your Wi-Fi network and choose Forget Network.
- Restart your Firestick by unplugging it for 30 seconds.
- Go back to Settings, then Network, select your network again, and re-enter your Wi-Fi password carefully, since it’s case-sensitive.
Router-Side Fixes
- Restart your router by unplugging it for 30 seconds — this resolves a large share of home Wi-Fi issues.
- If your router broadcasts separate 2.4GHz and 5GHz networks, try connecting your Firestick to the 2.4GHz band, which typically has better range even though it’s slower.
- If you’re using an HDMI extender cable, position the Firestick further from the TV itself, since some TVs can interfere with Wi-Fi reception at close range.
- Check that your router’s firmware is up to date through its manufacturer’s app.
Last Resort: A Full Reset
If nothing above works, a full factory reset clears out any corrupted network settings, though it also erases everything else on the device, so it’s worth trying every fix above first. A factory reset is done from Settings, then My Fire TV, then Reset to Factory Defaults.
If every device in your home is having trouble connecting, not just the Firestick, the problem is almost certainly with your router or internet provider rather than the Firestick itself.
