How to Connect Your Firestick to Wi-Fi
A Firestick needs an internet connection to do almost anything, so connecting it to Wi-Fi is one of the first steps in setup. Here’s how to get connected, plus what to do if your Firestick won’t find your network.
How to Connect to Wi-Fi
- During initial setup, your Firestick will automatically scan for nearby networks. If you’re changing networks later, go to Settings, then Network.
- Select your network name (SSID) from the list.
- Use the on-screen keyboard to enter your Wi-Fi password, then select Connect.
- Wait for the connection to confirm — this usually takes just a few seconds.
If Your Network Doesn’t Show Up
Select Add Network at the bottom of the Wi-Fi list to manually type in your network name and password — this is common for hidden networks that don’t broadcast their SSID. If your router uses both 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands under different names, try connecting to the 2.4GHz band first, since it has better range even though it’s slower.
Troubleshooting Connection Problems
- Double check the password — it’s case-sensitive and easy to mistype on the remote’s on-screen keyboard.
- Restart your router by unplugging it for 30 seconds, since a router that needs a reboot is one of the most common causes of a Firestick failing to connect.
- Move closer to your router temporarily to rule out a weak signal, especially if your Firestick is behind a TV or inside an entertainment center.
- Restart the Firestick itself from Settings, then My Fire TV, then Restart.
Once connected, your Firestick will remember the network and reconnect automatically every time it powers on, unless you change routers or reset the device.
