How to Manage Privacy and Data Collection Settings on Firestick
Like most streaming devices, Firestick collects some usage data to power recommendations and ads — but you have more control over what’s shared than you might expect. Here’s where to find the relevant settings.
Where to Find Privacy Settings
Go to Settings, then Preferences, then Privacy Settings.
Key Privacy Toggles
- Device Usage Data — controls whether Amazon collects data about how you use apps and features to improve the product.
- Interest-Based Ads — turns off ad personalization based on your viewing habits, though you’ll still see ads, just less targeted ones.
- Collect App Usage Data — limits what individual third-party apps can report back about your activity within them.
- Voice Recordings — found under Settings, then Alexa Privacy, where you can review or delete recordings made through the Voice Remote and turn off voice history retention entirely.
Managing App Permissions
Individual apps can request access to things like your microphone or location. Review these under Settings, then Applications, then Manage Installed Applications, select an app, then check its permissions — you can revoke anything that seems unnecessary for what the app actually does.
Turning off data collection won’t break core Firestick functionality, though it may make recommendations less tailored to your viewing habits.
