How to Pair Your Firestick Remote for the First Time
Firestick remotes use Bluetooth rather than infrared, so they don’t need a direct line of sight to work — but they do need to be paired to your device first. Most of the time this happens automatically, but it’s easy to fix if it doesn’t.
Automatic Pairing During Setup
When you plug in a brand-new Firestick, it automatically searches for and pairs with the remote included in the box within the first minute or two — just point the remote at the TV and press any button. You’ll see an on-screen prompt confirming the remote is connected before setup continues.
How to Manually Pair the Remote
- Unplug the Firestick from power, wait 10 seconds, then plug it back in.
- Press and hold the Home button on the remote for about 10 seconds.
- Release the button and wait — the TV screen or a light on the remote will indicate when pairing succeeds.
Pairing a Replacement or Second Remote
If you already have one working remote, you can pair an additional or replacement one from the settings menu: go to Settings, then Controllers & Bluetooth Devices, then Amazon Fire TV Remotes, then Add New Remote. Then follow the same steps above — hold the Home button on the new remote for about 10 seconds.
If the Remote Still Won’t Pair
- Replace the batteries — low batteries are the most common cause of pairing failures.
- Move within a few feet of the Firestick during pairing, since Bluetooth range can be inconsistent through walls or furniture.
- Unplug the Firestick for a full minute to fully reset it, then try pairing again from a fresh power cycle.
