The current version of the Nvidia Shield TV was released in 2019. This release came with two new models, the Nvidia Shield TV (Tube version) retailing at $149.99 and the pro version coming in at $199.99 USD. At the time, these devices quickly became the number one streaming device and the most popular budget gaming option. However, we have not seen any meaning full changes or updates to the shield in nearly a year. Let’s take a look at all the reasons you may want to hold off purchasing one in 2024.

Nvidia Shield CPU Performance No Longer On Top

The Nvidia Shield sat on top of CPU performance for years, however those numbers are starting to close. Now, don’t get me wrong, the shield still has some of the best possible benchmark scores. However, even devices like the Firestick Max is starting to creep up slowly. The Bench mark scores below ran by AFTV News tells the complete story.

I want to point out that although the Fire TV cube does beat the Nvidia Shield in both single and Multi core use, it doesn’t necessary make it that much better. These test don’t tell the full story but should be used to paint a picture of the situation. The biggest one to point out is the newest Firestick 4k Max. For a super affordable device it sits within striking distance of the shield TV.

GPU is a different story, the Nvidia Shield has and will always crush it’s competitors in this category. You can see the Shield easily bypasses every device in gaming capabilities.

Nvidia Shield TV Updates Have Disappeared

Unlike other devices, the Nvidia Shield TV has not seen a meaningful update in over a year. In fact, the last update to the Shield was experience 9.1.1 which was released in November of 2022. What does this mean? Well typically, when a device is at it’s end of life, companies will stop releasing OS updates. This means they may either be getting ready for a new release or completely scrapping the shield TV as a whole.

The Price remains the Same

Despite being a 5 year old device, the shield rarely goes on sale. It has been stuck at the same price point with no signs of going down in price. Comparing this to Fire TV devices that often go on sale, it is hard to justify the price point. Right now, a Fire TV cube can be purchased for around 139.99, but often can be snagged for as low as 99.99.

My question to readers, do you want an old device that may be obsolete or have a new version coming out? Probably not. Once devices reach their EOL it is best to stop purchasing them, either wait for the new version or get yourself a different device. Let’s stop putting money into Nvidia’s pockets and get some answers on when a upgraded device will be released.
